Tavira is situated on the River Gilao which runs through the centre making it an ideal fishing town. The Roman bridge pictured here relates to the Portuguese heritage of this town and its Moorish influences of time gone by. When stroling round Tavira to get the ambience of the buildings and tiled houses in the cobbled streets you can feel the history of the place unfold. Tavira Beaches
The beautiful beaches on the Ilha de Tavira - just take a short ferry taxi from the town centre.
The Island beaches along the Tavira coast line have beuatiful golden sand and calm clear waters in a natural environment, the main beaches are - Praia de Tavira, Praia de Terra Estreita and Praia do Barril.
Praia do Barril is a lovely beach which was formaly a blue fin tuna fishing village in years gone by and remains of the village have been transformed into the beach tourist facilities. The feature of this beach is the 'Anchor Cemetary' a rusting memorial to the fishing community where the boats were anchored, well worth a visit to this unique site!
